straighten Stand height matters

A typical heavy-duty tree stand adds 15 cm (6 in). Pick "Tall" if your stand is the cast-iron Christmas-tree-farm style — those add 25 cm.

star Topper allowance

Add space for the topper before anything else. A spire angel typically eats 30 cm of headroom; flat-disc stars are slimmer at 25 cm.

shield Safety gap

Leave 15–30 cm clearance — particularly for fairy lights, which can warm a ceiling and discolour paint over a week.

Formula & methodology

Formula: Max tree = ceiling − stand − topper − clearance; recommend largest retail size ≤ max

  1. Enter ceiling height (ft or m).
  2. Pick your stand height, topper type and desired clearance gap.
  3. The calculator subtracts the allowances and recommends the largest standard retail size (4.5–12 ft) that fits, plus a footprint check if you give the room width.

Worked example: 9 ft ceiling, standard stand, star topper, comfortable gap → max 7.2 ft, recommended 7 ft tree (2.13 m). A 7.5 ft tree would put the star against the ceiling.

What size tree for a 9-foot ceiling?
A 7 ft tree. After a 6-inch stand, 10-inch star and 6-inch breathing room, your real budget is ~7.2 ft — and 7 ft is the largest standard size under it. With no topper you could squeeze a 7.5 ft.
How wide will my tree be?
Full-profile trees run ~65% of height in diameter (a 7-footer spans ~4.5 ft); slim profiles ~40–50%. Enter your room width and the calculator checks the footprint fits with walking room.
Do listed tree heights include the stand?
Artificial trees: yes, usually measured with their integral stand. Real trees: no — the lot measures the cut tree alone, so subtract your own stand height, exactly as the calculator does.
How much clearance should be above the topper?
6 inches looks comfortable; 12 inches if the topper is lit (heat and visual halo). 2 inches reads as "wedged in" — only for maximalists.
Real trees often measure bigger than labelled — true?
Lots commonly band sizes (6–7 ft sold as "7 ft") and trees relax wider at home. Buy with 6 inches of margin to your computed max, or measure the actual tree before paying.
