Formula & methodology

Formula: Per week = (target − saved) ÷ weeks until 25 December

  1. Enter your Christmas budget target and what you’ve already set aside.
  2. The calculator counts the exact days to the next 25 December.
  3. The shortfall is divided into per-day, per-week and per-month amounts.

Worked example — 10 June 2026, target $800 with $200 saved: $600 to go over 29 weeks = $20.69/week ($85.71/month, $3.03/day).

Frequently asked questions

How much should I save for Christmas?
US households typically spend $650–900 on gifts plus ~$300 on food/travel/décor. Set the target at last year’s actual spend — then this tool converts it to a painless weekly amount.
When should I start saving for Christmas?
January is ideal — an $800 budget needs only ~$16/week. Starting in June roughly doubles that ($28/week); waiting until November quadruples it again. Earlier is exponentially easier.
Weekly or monthly savings — which is better?
Whichever matches your pay cycle; the tool shows both. Weekly amounts feel smaller and absorb a missed week more gracefully.
Where should the Christmas fund live?
A separate high-yield savings account or a credit-union "Christmas club" so it isn’t spent accidentally. At 4% APY, $20/week from June adds a few extra dollars by December — the habit matters more than the yield.
What if I fall behind on the plan?
Re-run the calculator with your current saved amount — it always rebalances the shortfall over the weeks that remain, so the plan stays achievable instead of abandoned.
