Christmas Turkey Size Calculator | Whole, Crown or Boneless

A Christmas turkey size calculator converts guest counts into the bird weight to buy. Adults count as one serving equivalent, children as half, scaled by appetite (1.0–1.5 lb per equivalent) and cut: crowns need about 30% less and boneless joints about half the weight of a whole bird with bones.

Quick reference

Whole turkey weight by guest count (standard appetite):

GuestsWhole birdCrown
4 adults + 2 kids6.5 lb / 3 kg4.5 lb / 2 kg
8 adults + 3 kids12 lb / 5.4 kg8.4 lb / 3.8 kg
12 adults15 lb / 6.8 kg10.5 lb / 4.8 kg

groups Kids count half

Children under about 12 eat roughly half an adult portion, so three kids add 1.5 equivalents.

set_meal Leftovers included

The standard 1.25 lb/eq already assumes you want turkey for next-day sandwiches and soup.

knife Crown vs whole

A crown serves the same people at 70% of the weight because there are no carcass bones — but you lose the wishbone drama and soup stock.

scale Oven reality

Very large birds (20 lb+) dramatically increase cooking time; two smaller birds can be easier to roast and carve.

lightbulb A real example — Christmas for 8 adults, 3 children

Standard appetites, whole bird, leftovers wanted.

Result: 12 lb (5.4 kg) whole turkey — or an 8.4 lb crown if oven space is tight.

What this means: Roast the crown first if serving buffet-style, then the legs separately — total oven time drops by over an hour versus a single 12 lb bird.

Formula & methodology

Formula: Equivalents = adults + 0.5 × children; Weight(lb) = Equivalents × appetite (1.0–1.5) × cut factor (whole 1.0 / crown 0.7 / boneless 0.5)

How turkey sizing works

Whole turkeys carry bones, so plan 1.25 lb (about 570 g) per adult equivalent — enough for seconds and the obligatory leftovers. Children count as half an adult.

  • Appetite: light eaters 1.0 lb, standard 1.25 lb, big appetites 1.5 lb per equivalent.
  • Crown (boneless breast on the bone) wastes less, so ×0.7.
  • Boneless rolled joint needs only ×0.5 of the whole-bird weight.

Example: 8 adults + 3 children = 9.5 equivalents × 1.25 = about 12 lb (5.4 kg) whole, or an 8.4 lb crown.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds of turkey do I need per person?
Plan 1.25 lb (570 g) of whole turkey per adult, or 0.875 lb for a crown and 0.625 lb for a boneless joint. Children count as roughly half an adult.
What size turkey for 10 adults?
About 12–13 lb (5.5–6 kg) whole, assuming standard appetites and that you want leftovers. A crown for the same table is around 9 lb.
How much turkey for 8 adults and 3 children?
That is 9.5 adult equivalents — about a 12 lb (5.4 kg) whole turkey, an 8.4 lb crown, or a 6 lb boneless roast.
Is a bigger turkey better value?
Usually, yes — per-pound price drops with size and leftovers are the bonus. But birds over ~20 lb take disproportionately long to cook; two 12 lb birds can be easier.
