Formula & methodology

Formula: Volume = (π⁄4) × (OD² − ID²) × length

  1. Measure the outer diameter, inner diameter and length in the same unit.
  2. Square each diameter and subtract: OD² − ID².
  3. Multiply by π/4 to get the ring cross-section area.
  4. Multiply the cross-section by the length for the hollow volume.

Example: OD 6, ID 5, length 24 (inches) gives about 207 in³ of material — roughly 0.90 gallons of internal capacity.

How do I find a pipe's circumference from its diameter?
Circumference = π × outside diameter. A 4.5 in OD pipe (nominal 4-inch steel) measures 14.14 inches around. This is also the practical way to measure OD in the field: wrap a tape around the pipe and divide the reading by π.
How do I get the diameter of a pipe I can't measure across?
Wrap a flexible tape (or a string you then measure) around the pipe and divide by π = 3.1416. A wrap of 7.85 inches means an OD of 2.50 inches. Note this gives the outside diameter — subtract twice the wall thickness for the true bore.
What does the 'perimeter' of a cylinder mean?
For a circular cross-section it's just the circumference, πd. If someone asks for the perimeter of the side profile (the rectangle you'd see from the side), that's 2 × (height + diameter) — a 10 cm tall, 6 cm wide cylinder has a 32 cm profile perimeter. The calculator's circumference output covers the usual case.
