Formula & methodology

Formula: Compare moles ÷ coefficient for each reactant; the smaller ratio is limiting

The limiting reactant is the one that runs out first. Divide each reactant's moles by its balanced equation coefficient; the smallest ratio identifies the limiting reactant.

  1. Balance the equation and note each reactant's coefficient.
  2. Enter the moles and coefficient for reactant A and reactant B.
  3. The calculator computes moles ÷ coefficient for each.
  4. The smaller ratio is the limiting reactant; the other is in excess.

Worked example: 3 mol A (coeff 1) gives ratio 3; 2 mol B (coeff 3) gives 0.67, so B is limiting.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the limiting reactant?
Divide each reactant's moles by its balanced coefficient. The reactant with the smallest ratio is limiting because it runs out first.
Why do I need the coefficients?
Reactants are consumed in the ratio set by the balanced equation, so the raw mole counts must be scaled by their coefficients.
What is the excess reactant?
It is the reactant that is left over after the limiting reactant is fully consumed — the one with the larger mole-to-coefficient ratio.
Does the limiting reactant set the yield?
Yes. The theoretical product amount is determined entirely by how much limiting reactant you start with.
