Where exact rational arithmetic matters — fractions, factorials, simplification — we use a dedicated BigNumber path so 1/3 + 1/6 returns ½, not 0.49999.

Move the decimal point until one non-zero digit remains to its left. 0.00045 → 4.5, and the point moved 4 places to the right, so the exponent is −4.

Result: 0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴ (and 45,000 = 4.5 × 10⁴).

What this means: A negative exponent means a small number (less than 1); a positive exponent means a large number.

Formula: a × 10^n where 1 ≤ |a| < 10

Move the decimal until one non-zero digit remains to the left. The number of places moved becomes the exponent; moving left gives a positive exponent, moving right gives a negative exponent.

Scientific notation allows any exponent with one digit before the point (4.7 × 10⁴); engineering notation restricts exponents to multiples of 3 (47 × 10³) so they map onto unit prefixes — kilo, mega, micro. 0.00082 is 8.2 × 10⁻⁴ scientifically but 820 × 10⁻⁶ in engineering form, which reads directly as 820 micro-units.
Is 'standard form' the same as scientific notation?
In UK schools, yes — standard form means a × 10ⁿ with 1 ≤ a < 10, so 34,500 is 3.45 × 10⁴. Confusingly, in US usage 'standard form' often means the ordinary expanded number itself. This calculator converts both directions, whichever naming your textbook uses.
