Calculations use 64-bit floating point with sensible rounding for the domain (currency to 2 decimals, percentages to 4 decimals, algebra to 6 significant figures). Where exact rational arithmetic matters — fractions, factorials, simplification — we use a dedicated BigNumber path so 1/3 + 1/6 returns ½, not 0.49999.

Formula & methodology

Formula: p̂ = x/n; SE = √(p̂(1−p̂)/n); CI = p̂ ± z × SE

  1. Enter the number of successes x (people who said yes, items that passed, etc.).
  2. Enter the total sample size n.
  3. Choose a confidence level; its z-value scales the margin of error.
  4. The tool reports p̂ = x/n, the standard error, the margin of error and the Wald confidence interval, plus a check that np̂ and n(1−p̂) are both at least 10.

Worked example: 120 successes in 400 trials at 95% → p̂ = 0.30, SE = 0.0229, margin of error ±0.0449, CI 0.2551 – 0.3449 (25.51% to 34.49%).

Frequently asked questions

What is a population proportion?
The share of an entire population with some trait — e.g. the true fraction of voters supporting a candidate. You estimate it with the sample proportion p̂ = successes ÷ sample size.
How do you calculate the confidence interval for a proportion?
p̂ ± z√(p̂(1−p̂)/n). For 120 of 400 at 95%: 0.30 ± 1.96 × 0.0229 = 0.2551 to 0.3449.
What does the margin of error mean?
The half-width of the interval — how far the true proportion plausibly sits from your estimate. Quadrupling the sample size halves it.
When is the normal approximation valid?
When both np̂ and n(1−p̂) are at least 10 (some texts use 5). The calculator checks this; with tiny samples or proportions near 0 or 1, use a Wilson or exact interval instead.
What's the difference between 95% and 99% confidence?
99% uses z = 2.5758 instead of 1.96, widening the interval about 31%. You trade precision for a higher long-run capture rate of the true proportion.
