Formula & methodology

Formula: Rate = events ÷ population × base (1,000 or 100,000)

  1. Enter the number of events (cases, births, incidents) and the population at risk.
  2. The tool divides events by population for the raw proportion.
  3. It multiplies by 1,000 and 100,000 — the standard epidemiological bases — plus a percentage.

Example: 125 cases in a town of 50,000 → 2.5 per 1,000 = 250 per 100,000 = 0.25%.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a rate per 1,000?
Divide events by the population and multiply by 1,000: 125 ÷ 50,000 × 1,000 = 2.5 per 1,000 people.
Why use per 100,000 instead of percent?
Rare events produce awkward percentages (0.006%); per 100,000 turns them into readable whole numbers (6 per 100,000). It is the standard for crime and disease statistics.
What is a crude rate?
A rate over the whole population without adjusting for age or other structure. Comparing two areas fairly often needs age-standardised rates — crude rates are the first step.
What population should I divide by?
The population actually at risk during the time period — usually the mid-year population. For events only possible in a subgroup (e.g. births → women 15–49), specific rates use that subgroup.
Can I use this for incidence and prevalence?
Yes — incidence uses new cases over a period; prevalence uses existing cases at a point in time. Both divide by population and scale to a base.
