Calculations use 64-bit floating point with sensible rounding for the domain (currency to 2 decimals, percentages to 4 decimals, algebra to 6 significant figures). Where exact rational arithmetic matters — fractions, factorials, simplification — we use a dedicated BigNumber path so 1/3 + 1/6 returns ½, not 0.49999.

Formula: KE = ½ × m × v² (m in kg, v in m/s, KE in joules)

  1. Enter the mass and pick its unit (kg, g, or lb).
  2. Enter the velocity and pick its unit (m/s, km/h, mph, ft/s).
  3. Both convert to SI (1 lb = 0.4536 kg; 1 mph = 0.4470 m/s).
  4. KE = ½ m v² in joules.

Example: 10 kg at 5 m/s → 0.5 × 10 × 25 = 125 J.

What is the kinetic energy formula?
KE = ½mv² — half the mass in kilograms times the velocity in meters per second, squared. The answer is in joules.

Why does speed matter more than mass?
Velocity is squared in the formula: doubling speed quadruples the energy, while doubling mass merely doubles it. This is why crash severity rises so steeply with speed.

Yes — the calculator converts to SI first: 1 lb = 0.4536 kg and 1 mph = 0.4470 m/s.
