Calculations use 64-bit floating point with sensible rounding for the domain (currency to 2 decimals, percentages to 4 decimals, algebra to 6 significant figures). Where exact rational arithmetic matters — fractions, factorials, simplification — we use a dedicated BigNumber path so 1/3 + 1/6 returns ½, not 0.49999.

Formula: Look at the digit after the rounding place: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down

Rounding replaces a number with a nearby simpler value at a chosen place — decimals, whole numbers, tens, or significant figures. The standard rule checks the first dropped digit: 5 or more rounds the kept digit up, otherwise it stays. The calculator also supports banker's rounding (round half to even), which reduces cumulative bias in large datasets and is used in finance and statistics.

How do I round to two decimal places?
Look at the third decimal: if it's 5 or more, increase the second decimal by one; otherwise keep it. 3.14159 becomes 3.14.
What is round half up vs banker's rounding?
Round half up always rounds .5 upward. Banker's rounding sends .5 to the nearest even digit, which avoids systematic upward bias.
How do I round to significant figures?
Count significant digits from the first non-zero digit, then round at that position. 0.004519 to 2 sig figs is 0.0045.
How do I round to the nearest ten or hundred?
Check the digit in the next-lower place: for the nearest ten, look at the ones digit. 47 rounds to 50, 43 rounds to 40.
Why do results sometimes differ from a spreadsheet?
Spreadsheets may use banker's rounding or floating-point representation. Select the matching method to reproduce their output.
How do I estimate a sum by rounding?
Round each number to the same place, then add: 487 + 316 + 208 rounded to hundreds is 500 + 300 + 200 = 1,000 (actual: 1,011). Rounding to tens gives estimates within about 1%. This is the fastest checkout-line sanity check there is — if the register says $1,600 for those items, something scanned twice.
