Where exact rational arithmetic matters — fractions, factorials, simplification — we use a dedicated BigNumber path so 1/3 + 1/6 returns ½, not 0.49999.

  2. Pick the averaging method — the 65%-recent decaying average is the common SBG default.
  3. The proficiency average converts through district-style bands to a percentage and letter, with the raw percentage shown for comparison.

Worked example: scores 2, 3, 3, 4, 3.5 → decaying average 3.54/4 = "Exceeds standard", A (90.7%); the simple mean of the same scores is 3.1 — a B — showing why the method choice matters.

Frequently asked questions

How does standards-based grading convert to a letter grade?
Through bands, not raw percentages: "meets standard" (3 of 4) maps to the B range, ~3.5+ to A. A raw 3/4 = 75% would unfairly read as a C — the banded conversion fixes exactly that.
What is a decaying average?
A recency-weighted average — each new score counts 65%, all history 35%. A student who starts at 2 and climbs to 4 scores far better than their mean suggests, rewarding actual mastery growth.
What do the 0–4 rubric scores mean?
The common scale: 4 = exceeds standard, 3 = meets, 2 = approaching, 1 = beginning, 0 = no evidence. Some districts use 3- or 5-point scales — the calculator supports those too.
Which averaging method should I pick?
Match your school’s policy: decaying average is the PowerSchool/JumpRope default; median suits noisy data; "most recent" fits strict mastery models. The result label always names the method used.
Why does my school’s conversion differ slightly?
Districts publish their own band cut-points (some put "meets" at 85%, others 80%). This tool uses the most common mapping — treat it as a faithful guide and check your district table for the official line.
