Calculations use 64-bit floating point with sensible rounding for the domain (currency to 2 decimals, percentages to 4 decimals, algebra to 6 significant figures). Where exact rational arithmetic matters — fractions, factorials, simplification — we use a dedicated BigNumber path so 1/3 + 1/6 returns ½, not 0.49999.

Formula & methodology

Formula: t ≈ 0.84 × (weight ÷ hp)^0.75 × drivetrain factor (AWD 0.92, RWD 1.00, FWD 1.08)

  1. Enter vehicle weight including driver (lbs).
  2. Enter crank horsepower.
  3. Choose the drivetrain — AWD launches hardest, FWD softest.
  4. Read the estimated 0–60 time and quarter-mile.

Example: 3,500 lb / 300 hp = 11.67 lb/hp → 0.84 × 11.67^0.75 ≈ 5.30 s (RWD).

Frequently asked questions

How do you estimate 0-60 from horsepower?
From power-to-weight: t ≈ 0.84 × (lb/hp)^0.75, adjusted for drivetrain grip. 3,500 lb with 300 hp (11.7 lb/hp) lands near 5.3 seconds RWD.
Why does AWD beat RWD off the line with equal power?
Four driven wheels double the available traction during the first 60 feet, where wheelspin wastes the most time.
What lb/hp do I need for a sub-4-second car?
Roughly 7 lb/hp or better with AWD — e.g. 3,500 lb needs about 500 hp.
How accurate is this estimate?
Within ~0.5 s for typical cars. Gearing, tire compound, launch control, density altitude, and surface all move real-world numbers.
Does the quarter-mile estimate use the same inputs?
Yes — it applies Hale’s classic ET ≈ 6.29 × (lb/hp)^(1/3) drag-racing approximation.
How do I convert a 1/8 mile time to a 1/4 mile time?
Multiply the eighth-mile ET by about 1.56: an 8.2-second eighth predicts a 12.8-second quarter. Trap speed scales by roughly 1.25. The factors drift for very fast cars (high-power builds trend nearer 1.54) and for traction-limited launches, but 1.56 is the accepted bracket-racing rule of thumb.
