Zakat on shares hinges on your intent. Bought to resell? They are trade goods, and 2.5% of the full market value is due each year. Held long-term for dividends and growth? Then most contemporary scholars, following AAOIFI methodology, levy zakat only on your slice of the companies’ zakatable assets — cash, receivables, inventory — commonly approximated at 25–30% of market value when the exact ratio is unknown.
This calculator implements both methods: choose your intent, set the zakatable percentage for long-term holdings, add dividends you kept during the year, and it checks the silver nisab and returns the amount due. Income from non-compliant business must be purified in full separately — purification is its own obligation, not zakat.

- Enter today's market value of the portfolio.
- Pick your intent: active trading (full value zakatable) or long-term investment (only the companies' liquid assets are zakatable — enter the percentage, 25% if unknown).
- Add dividends kept during the year; the calculator checks the silver nisab and applies 2.5%.
Worked example: a $50,000 long-term portfolio using the 25% proxy has a zakatable base of $12,500; adding $1,000 of kept dividends gives $13,500 → zakat = $337.50. The same portfolio actively traded owes 2.5% of the full value: $1,250.
