Formula & methodology

Formula: Total = (rakats per night + Witr) × nights

  1. Choose your nightly rakats (8 or 20 are standard), whether to count Witr, and the number of nights (29 or 30).
  2. The calculator multiplies through for the month’s total.

Worked example: 20 rakats + 3 Witr over 29 nights = 667 rakats for the month; the 8-rakat practice with Witr totals 319.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tarawih 8 or 20 rakats?
Both have strong precedent: Aisha (ra) reported the Prophet ﷺ prayed 11 (8+3 Witr); 20 became the congregational standard under Umar (ra) and remains the Haramain practice. Either count is valid — pray what you can sustain well.
Is Tarawih obligatory?
No — it is a strongly recommended sunnah (sunnah mu’akkadah). The Prophet ﷺ prayed it in congregation some nights and at home others, precisely so it wouldn’t be made obligatory.
Do I have to pray the full amount every night?
No — pray what you can with focus. The hadith promises that praying with the imam until he finishes earns the reward of the whole night, whatever the count.
When is Witr prayed in Ramadan?
After Tarawih as the night’s final prayer, usually 3 rakats in congregation. If you plan to pray tahajjud later, you may delay Witr to the end of your night instead.
How long does Tarawih take?
Typically 45–90 minutes: 8 rakats with longer recitation ≈ 45–60 min; 20 with moderate recitation ≈ 60–90. Mosques completing the Quran in the month recite ~1 juz per night.
