Healthy Weight Calculator | Ideal Range by Height

A healthy weight calculator converts height into the weight range that keeps BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 — the WHO-recognized healthy band. Range = 18.5×h² to 24.9×h² with height in metres.

Enter height once — the range comes back in both kg and pounds, no unit juggling.

monitor_weight Why a range

Single-number 'ideal weight' formulas are 19th-century relics; the BMI band reflects real population health data.

fitness_center Athlete caveat

Muscle weighs more than fat: a lean lifter can sit above 24.9 BMI with excellent metabolic health.

elderly Older adults

Some geriatric guidelines accept slightly higher BMI (23–28) as protective in later life — context matters.

lightbulb A real example — 175 cm adult

Height 175 cm, no other inputs needed.

Result: Healthy range: 56.7 – 76.3 kg (125 – 168 lb).

What this means: Anywhere inside the band is healthy; where you sit within it depends on frame, muscle mass and ethnicity — South Asian risk thresholds run lower (18.5–22.9).

Formula & methodology

Formula: Healthy range = 18.5 × h² to 24.9 × h² (h in metres)

The BMI-band method

Clinicians define 'healthy weight' as the range that keeps BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m². Solve BMI = weight ÷ height² for weight and you get the range directly from height:

  • 170 cm → 53.5 – 71.9 kg
  • 175 cm → 56.7 – 76.3 kg
  • 180 cm → 60.0 – 80.7 kg

Limits: BMI can't see muscle versus fat — athletes often read 'overweight' at low body fat, and older adults carry fat differently. For those cases pair this with waist-to-hip ratio or body-fat percentage.

Classic 'ideal weight' formulas (Devine, Hamwi, Robinson) give a single number; the BMI band is the modern clinical replacement because it's a range.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy weight for my height?
The range that keeps BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. At 175 cm (5'9") that's 56.7–76.3 kg (125–168 lb); at 170 cm it's 53.5–71.9 kg.
How much should a 5'7" person weigh?
Roughly 118–158 lb (53.5–71.9 kg) — the BMI 18.5–24.9 band for 170 cm.
Is BMI accurate for muscular people?
Not for individuals with high muscle mass — BMI overestimates fatness in athletes. Pair it with waist-to-hip ratio or body-fat percentage.
Is there one ideal weight number?
No. Older formulas (Devine, Hamwi) produce single numbers, but modern guidance uses the healthy BMI range because natural body variation is wide.
