How daily fat intake is calculated

Choose what fraction of your calories should come from fat, then convert to grams. Fat is energy-dense at 9 calories per gram.

Example

On 2,000 calories at 30% fat: fat calories = 2,000 x 0.30 = 600 kcal. Fat grams = 600 / 9 = 67 g.

The Dietary Guidelines recommend 20-35% of calories from total fat, with saturated fat kept under 10%. Favor unsaturated fats — olive oil, nuts, avocado, fish — over saturated and trans fats.

How many calories are in a gram of fat?
