Pea Gravel vs Crushed Stone vs Crusher Run: Which One Doe…

The first time I ordered stone for a driveway, I made a classic mistake. I simply asked the quarry for “gravel.” What I got was a truckload of smooth pea gravel. It looked great for about a week, but then every car that pulled in pushed it around like marbles. I spent the next month raking it back out of the lawn.

This happens all the time because suppliers sell a dozen products under the general name “gravel.” The real differences only show up after the stone is already down. For most projects, you’ll choose between three main types: pea gravel, clean crushed stone, and crusher run. They’re usually priced within a few dollars of each other, but trust me, they are not interchangeable.

  • Pea gravel — This stone is small, rounded, and mostly for looks. It’s great for spaces between stepping stones or in dog runs. But it’s terrible on slopes and under vehicle tires.
  • Clean crushed stone — This is angular rock with all the fine dust screened out. It’s the perfect choice around drains and as a top layer over a packed base.
  • Crusher run — This is angular rock that still has the stone dust mixed in. It packs down super tight, almost like a solid layer. That’s why it’s the standard base for driveways, sheds, and patios.

Pea Gravel: Pretty, Not for Structure

Pea gravel is stone that has been smoothed by rivers. It’s about the size of—you guessed it—a pea, usually around 3/8 inch. Since every piece is rounded, it never locks together. Step on it, and it moves.

This shifting surface is exactly what you want in a play area or a walking path with proper edging. It feels soft and natural. However, it’s also why pea gravel doesn’t work well in the two places people often want to use it: driveways and slopes.

Rounded stone under a tire acts like ball bearings. On any slope steeper than a very gentle grade, it slowly slides downhill. If you really love the look for a driveway, you’ll need to put plastic grid stabilizers underneath. Just know that this will roughly double your material cost.

One good thing about pea gravel is that it’s comfortable. You can kneel on it while weeding or walk barefoot on it in July without any regrets. It’s much softer on your feet than sharp crushed stone.

Clean Crushed Stone: Your Drain’s Best Friend

Crushed stone comes from rock that’s been run through a crusher and then screened to size. A common size is 3/4 inch, which is a real workhorse. The “clean” part means the dust and tiny particles have been washed or sifted out. This leaves open spaces (voids) between all the angular pieces.

These voids are super important. Water moves through clean stone almost as fast as it hits it. That’s why you always use clean crushed stone (often called drain rock at the yard) for French drains, foundation perimeter drains, and dry wells. If you fill a drain trench with crusher run instead, you’ll end up with a very expensive clay dam that won’t drain anything.

Angular stone also stays in place much better than pea gravel. A 3/4-inch layer of clean crushed stone on top of a compacted base is a classic surface for rural driveways. It locks together underfoot, sheds rain easily, and doesn’t scatter all over the place.

Crusher Run: The Base Layer That Acts Like Pavement

Crusher run is also known as crush and run, ABC, road base, or dense-grade aggregate, depending on where you live. It’s crushed stone that skips the final screening process. This means it contains everything from 3/4-inch rocks all the way down to fine powder.

This mix might sound like a flaw, but it’s actually its best feature. The fine particles fill the gaps between the angular stones. When you run a plate compactor over it, the whole layer locks together into something incredibly solid—you could almost drive a nail into it.

That’s why crusher run is the standard base for driveways, shed pads, paver patios, and retaining walls. Just remember, it is definitely not what you want around drains. The same fine particles that make it compact so well also make it nearly waterproof once it settles.

Here are two practical tips from projects that didn’t go as planned:

  • Compact it in layers. If you need a 6-inch base, put it down as two separate 3-inch layers. Compact each layer thoroughly. If you dump and compact 6 inches all at once, you’ll end up with a soft spot in the middle that will turn into ruts a year later.
  • Order for the compacted depth, not the loose depth. Crusher run loses about 10–15% of its volume when compacted. So, if your calculations say you need 5 cubic yards, you should actually order 6 cubic yards.

How Much Stone Do You Really Need?

All three materials use the same basic math for volume: area in square feet, multiplied by the depth in feet, then divided by 27 to get cubic yards. Their weights differ slightly. Pea gravel is about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Clean crushed stone ranges from 1.4 to 1.5 tons, and crusher run is about 1.5 tons because the fine particles pack into the voids.

Let’s look at an example for a 12 × 40 ft driveway, built the standard way:

  • Base layer: You’ll need 4 inches of crusher run. That’s 480 sq ft × 0.333 ft = 160 cu ft = 5.9 cubic yards. Don’t forget to add 15% for compaction, so order 7 cubic yards. This will be roughly 10.5 tons.
  • Top layer: For this, you’ll use 2 inches of 3/4-inch clean crushed stone. That’s 480 × 0.167 = 80 cu ft = 3 cubic yards, which is about 4.4 tons.

As you can see, that’s two separate deliveries of two different products. Specialty Stones You Might See on the Price List

Besides the main three, most yards also carry a few other products for specific jobs:

  • Decomposed granite (DG) — This is granite that has weathered down into a gritty mix of sand and fine particles. It compacts into a firm, natural-looking path surface that’s common in xeriscapes and public gardens. Plan on about 1.5 tons per cubic yard, laid 2–3 inches thick and compacted. Loose DG can wash away in heavy rain; stabilized DG (which has a binder mixed in) costs more but stays put.
  • River rock / cobbles (2–4 inch) — These are large, rounded stones used for dry creek beds and decorative accents. Coverage isn’t as good as the numbers might suggest because of all the air gaps between the stones. Expect one cubic yard to cover only about 80 sq ft if you’re laying a single layer of stones.
  • Rip-rap (6–12 inch) — These are big, quarried chunks of rock used to protect shorelines and steep slopes. They are usually quoted by the ton. One ton will cover roughly 35–40 sq ft if laid in a 12-inch layer. The layer itself should be 1.5–2 times the size of the largest stone.
  • Crushed asphalt (millings) — This is recycled road surface material, weighing around 1.35 tons per cubic yard. It’s cheap if you can find it, and it re-binds slightly in summer heat. This makes for a surprisingly solid driveway topping.

Every one of these specialty materials still uses the same area × depth volume math. Only their density and how well they cover an area will change.

Ordering Smart: Avoid Getting Burned

Here are three habits that will save you money and keep you from needing second deliveries:

  • Ask for the product by its exact spec, not a nickname. “Three-quarter clean” and “three-quarter minus” (which is crusher run) only differ by one word, but they behave like completely different materials. Regional names like #57 stone, ABC, road bond, or chat all map to either clean stone or minus stone. Always confirm which one you’re getting.
  • Get the supplier’s density number. Quarries weigh their trucks, and their specific number for tons-per-yard is always better than any general chart. Even moisture content can change the weight by 10%. If the yard sells by tons, order in tons.
  • Check the delivery minimum against your quantity. Many quarries have a delivery minimum of 3–5 tons. If your project only needs 1.5 tons, it’s usually cheaper to go with a local landscape yard that has smaller trucks, or even rent a trailer, rather than paying for the quarry’s minimum delivery.

Common Mistakes to Steer Clear Of

  • Using pea gravel on a slope or driveway. It will migrate everywhere. Always use angular stone anywhere gravity or vehicle tires are involved.
  • Putting crusher run in a drainage trench. The fine particles will seal it up. Drains always need clean stone.
  • Skipping the base layer. Two inches of pretty top stone laid directly on bare dirt will just disappear into the mud by spring. Always put down a compacted base layer first, then your decorative layer.
  • Ordering by the bag for anything over about 20 sq ft. Bagged stone costs 3–5 times more per ton than bulk. One small dump-truck delivery is almost always cheaper than forty bags, and it’s definitely easier on your back.
  • Forgetting landscape fabric under decorative stone. This isn’t mainly for weeds (that battle is often overrated). It’s to stop your stone from slowly sinking into the soil over time.

Which Stone, in One Sentence Each

If it’s decorative and on a flat surface: pea gravel. If water needs to pass through it easily: clean crushed stone. If anything heavy will sit or drive on it: use a crusher run base with a crushed stone top layer.

And if you’re standing at the supplier’s yard feeling unsure, just describe your project instead of trying to name a product. Saying “I need a base for a shed pad” will get you the right material at any quarry in the country. Just saying “gravel” will get you whatever happens to be closest to the loader.
