Formula & methodology

Formula: Characters = total symbols including spaces; words = count of space-separated tokens

The character counter tallies your text as you type, so you can stay within platform limits.

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. See live counts of characters, words, sentences and paragraphs.
  3. Compare characters against the limit for your platform.
  4. Trim until you fit (e.g. 280 for a post, 160 for a description).

Worked example: A 305-character draft is 25 over the 280 tweet limit, so trim 25 characters.

Frequently asked questions

How does a character counter work?
It counts every character you type — letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation — and updates the totals in real time.
Does it count spaces?
Yes, and it also shows a separate count excluding spaces, since some limits count spaces and others do not.
What is the Twitter/X character limit?
280 characters for a standard post. The counter shows when you exceed it.
How many characters should a meta description be?
Around 160 characters so Google does not truncate it in search results.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser, so your text stays on your device.
